The Local Plan for Ribble Valley provides the overall spatial planning outline for the area. Ribble Valley Borough Council is responsible for a range of planning and environmental issues including conservation areas.

Green Belts have been an enduring element of national planning policy.

They check the unrestricted sprawl of large built-up areas; prevent neighbouring towns from merging into one another; assist in safeguarding the countryside, preserve the character of historic towns and encourage the recycling of derelict and other urban land.

Altough Ribble Valley has a reletively low proportion of land designated as Green Belt, there is extensive countryside within the Ribble Valley Borough Council area and substantial part of the rural area of the authority is classified as part of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Beauty.

Clitheroe is a vibrant market town that is the largest conurbation in the area and is popular for shopping and leisure activities with locals and visitors alike.
