Ormskirk Conservation Area

Ormskirk is centrally located in the West Lancashire Plain, mid-way between Liverpool and Preston, and Wigan and Southport. The Ormskirk Town Centre Conservation Area, as the name suggests, is at the centre of the town of Ormskirk, at the northern end of the contiguous settlements of Ormskirk and Aughton.

The Ormskirk Conservation Area was originally designated by West Lancashire District Council in 1975 because it is the historic core of the town. It contains some impressive historic buildings which contribute significantly to the quality of West Lancashire's environment. It has since been extended three times, in 1985, 1989 and 2000.

The Ormskirk Conservation Area only covers the central part of the town, and it is mostly surrounded by mixed urban developments of varying characteristics and age. The town generally grew out from the centre along main roads with the latest developments mostly on the outer edges and between those main Roads.

To the southeast of Ormskirk Town Centre lies the Ruff Lane Conservation area. It was once home to a stone quarry, which was later turned into a Public Area, now known as Ruff Wood.

The Ruff Lane Conservation Area was designated by West Lancashire District Council in 1975. The area contains a number of historic buildings, which represent significant stages in the growth of Ormskirk. It contains some of the oldest surviving buildings in Ormskirk, including 30 Listed Buildings, and 2 Listed Structures as well as abundant tree cover and mature vegetation.
